5 Ways to Help an Insomniac Sleep

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that causes you to wake up during the night or have trouble falling asleep. It can take a toll on your health. You may also find it hard to function during the day.

Sleep disorders can be treated with behavioral therapy. This involves learning to control your thoughts and breathing to help you sleep. Behavioral therapy is generally recommended over medication. However, you should discuss your sleep problems with your primary care provider to see what methods can be helpful.

If you do not want to use medication, you can try some natural remedies. These include herbal supplements, acupressure, and hypnosis. Using a home light therapy unit can also be helpful.

Avoid caffeine before bedtime. Caffeine, including coffee, energy drinks, and soda, can disrupt sleep. Having too much caffeine can also lead to arousal in the second half of the night.

Keep your room quiet. Turn off electronics one hour before you go to bed. Also, avoid loud noises, such as televisions or music players. A white noise machine can be useful. Earplugs can also help block external noises.

Use a comfortable pillow. An uncomfortable pillow can interfere with your sleep. The mattress you choose can also affect your sleep.

If you still cannot fall asleep, get out of bed and do an activity that will relax you. For example, you could read a book, listen to music, or take a warm bath.

If you still cannot fall asleep, you can consider taking a nap. However, naps should be no more than 30 minutes.
