8 Stages of EMDR Home Therapy

EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy has been found effective for many issues, such as anxiety, PTSD, depression, and addiction. This therapy helps the brain process traumatic memories in a different way and replaces negative thought patterns with helpful ones.

This method of EMDR is highly effective as it places your brain in a safe and structured environment to process traumatic memories. Furthermore, you can do it from home in your own time and space without having to travel.

You will receive detailed instructions for each step, and you are free to take as much or little time as needed to finish the therapy. It is suggested that you complete the entire protocol at least three times per week over several weeks.

Your EMDR therapist will guide you through the process, encouraging you to focus on your distressing memory while also engaging in BLS (eye movements, tapping hands or listening to alternate clicking sounds through headphones). It is essential that both minds and bodies remain focused during this stage so that both can process trauma together.

When following the EMDR protocol, it’s important to stay focused on your distressing memory while engaging in BLS and remaining calm. This may be difficult if you’re feeling anxious or experiencing a fight/flight response. For this reason, having someone present during sessions is highly recommended.

Furthermore, you should have a private space where you won’t be disturbed. Ideally, locate an area in your home that is quiet and has adequate lighting.

You can utilize EMDR tools to process your memories at home, in a therapist’s office, group setting or even with children. Additionally, you can practice these techniques outside of a therapist’s office using an EMDR app on your phone.
