Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a psychosocial treatment program that emphasizes cognitive-behavioral skills. These abilities can help individuals transform negative patterns of thinking and emotions. Studies have suggested DBT may be effective for treating various mental health conditions, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder.

Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (c-ptsd) is a condition that develops after repeated or prolonged traumatic experiences. Compared to PTSD, c-ptsd includes symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as other emotional problems in addition to trauma symptoms. Signs and symptoms of c-ptsd may include feelings of shame or guilt, thoughts of blaming others, negative judgments about yourself and the world around you; it could even cause problems in relationships with friends and family.

C-ptsd is more common than PTSD and often goes undetected due to its absence from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5). Some experts have advocated for c-ptsd to be recognized as its own diagnosis in all manuals, separate from PTSD.

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a structured psychosocial intervention based on principles and rules. It strives to teach you new skills and strategies for altering your thinking habits, controlling emotions, and strengthening relationships.

DBT draws its principles and rules from “dialectical” behavior therapy, first developed in the 1980s to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Therapists practicing DBT employ a range of techniques to assist their patients in altering their negative thought patterns and behaviors.

Recently, a randomized clinical trial compared DBT-PTSD to treatment as usual (TAU) for those suffering from CA-associated PTSD and related conditions. The findings demonstrated that DBT-PTSD proved more successful at relieving symptoms such as dissociation than TAU did.

In the DBT-PTSD group, symptoms improved more rapidly and reliably than their TAU counterparts. The primary outcome measure, the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Inventory (PCL-C), showed a statistically significant improvement between groups; particularly on the re-experiencing subscale as well as hyperarousal scale.

This symptom response was associated with improvements in other psychopathologies linked to CA, such as dissociation, self-harm and high risk behaviors. Furthermore, those who received DBT-PTSD were less likely to drop out early and experienced higher rates of reliable improvement and recovery from PTSD.

DBT is an intensive, in-depth treatment for PTSD that involves several stages and requires up to 45 sessions of individual therapy over 12 weeks. The therapy includes exposure and cognitive-behavioral therapy components.

DBT can help you modify negative thinking habits, reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, and gain better emotional control. It may also be used for managing life events that cause traumatic symptoms.

DBT has been used successfully to treat many mental health disorders, but it’s especially successful at treating PTSD and BPD.
