A List of Complementary and Alternative Therapies

Complementary and alternative therapies (CAMs) refer to a wide range of medical treatments that may be used alongside or instead of conventional medical care. They can include diets, dietary supplements, herbal medicines as well as physical, psychological or spiritual approaches for health and healing.

Mind/body interventions: Yoga, meditation and other forms of relaxation therapy can be used to reduce stress, anxiety or depression. It’s a safe and effective way to enhance your overall health and wellbeing.

Acupuncture: This therapy utilizes fine needles to stimulate certain points on the body. It may be used for treating conditions such as pain, inflammation, allergies and autoimmune disease.

Herbal Medicine: Herbal medicines are made from plant parts such as leaves, seeds and roots and can be made into tea, lotions or pills that can be taken orally to address various health conditions.

Chiropractic medicine: This type of therapy, administered by a chiropractor, relies on the idea that our bodies’ natural healing powers are often underestimated. It aims to relieve pain and realign your joints and spine for improved alignment.

Naturopathic Medicine: Naturopathic medicine is an alternative system that does not rely on drugs or surgery for its healing effects. It relies on herbs, nutrition, and acupuncture to promote wellbeing and heal the body.

Dietary Approach: Eating a diet low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals and fibre can be beneficial to prevent and manage diseases like diabetes, obesity and cancer.

Spiritual Approach: This includes using religions and belief systems to promote health, such as ayurvedic or Chinese medicine. It may include guided imagery, hypnosis and meditation for added benefit.

Animal and Plant Medicine: This profession involves the utilization of animals and plants to promote health and cure diseases. It may be useful in preventing illnesses like arthritis, diabetes, and cancer as well as managing them once they arise.

Homeopathy: Homeopathy is a medical practice that utilizes natural products to treat illnesses and promote wellness. It works on the theory that every living being has an “energy force” flowing within them, which when blocked causes illness.

Reiki: This Japanese form of alternative therapy operates on the idea that your body has a “life force energy” which must be allowed to flow freely in order to stay healthy.

Contraceptives (CAMs) are generally accepted as safe and effective, although some practices may conflict with standard medical care. Before trying any CAM methods, be sure to consult with your traditional healthcare provider first.

Research into complementary and alternative treatments is still in its early stages. While results of some small-scale controlled trials have been encouraging, much more work needs to be done in this area.

Though complementary and alternative therapies can offer some temporary comfort, there isn’t enough proof to prove they cure cancer or stop its spread. They may cause side effects or interact with standard cancer treatments; these could thwart progress or lead to harmful adverse reactions.
