A List of Mental Illnesses

Mental illnesses affect how a person thinks, feels and behaves. They may make it difficult to function at home, school or work and cause distress to those around them. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in five Americans has experienced some form of mental health disorder at some point during their lives.

Mental disorders come in many forms and each has its own set of symptoms. Common signs may include feeling sad or depressed, sleeping too much, and feeling hopeless.

Depression is a widespread mental illness that impacts millions of people around the world, making it difficult to get through each day and potentially leading to suicidal thoughts.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness characterized by obsessions and compulsions. When these feelings of worry, stress or anxiety become overwhelming in daily life and interfere with functioning, then an assessment is made of the severity.

Psychotic disorders are mental illnesses that cause hallucinations, delusions or other distorted thinking patterns. These often begin in childhood and shape how a person views themselves, others and the world around them.

Paraphilic disorders are marked by persistent, intense sexual urges, fantasies or behaviors. These urges may arise without apparent cause and be triggered by certain situations, places or objects.

PTSD is a mental disorder that develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as physical assault, sexual abuse or natural disasters. The memories of these traumatic experiences can cause intense distress and drastically change how someone lives their daily life.
