A Music Therapy Conference is a Professional Development Opportunity

Music therapy conferences offer professional development opportunities for those working in the field of music therapy. At these events, attendees can learn from experienced practitioners, gain insight into current research and trends, as well as connect with colleagues from around the globe.

The Great Lakes Region of the American Music Therapy Association provides a range of virtual programs and events, such as our annual GLR-AMTA music therapy conference. These are hosted on both public and private platforms and open to all attendees; however, participants must abide by a code of conduct for these virtual programs.

GLR-AMTA executive committee members, attendees, speakers, volunteers, industry partners and exhibitors must abide by this Virtual Programs Code of Conduct when engaging in or interacting with these virtual programs or events. Should any participant or group violate this code of conduct, the organization reserves the right to terminate participation from these activities.

This policy applies to all GLR-AMTA virtual conference events, whether hosted by the Great Lakes Region of AMTA or other organizations. It is the responsibility of each participant to read and comprehend this code before participating.

No matter where one participates in a virtual event, all attendees are expected to practice an ethic of caring and curiosity while at the event or any environment related to it. Harassment, bullying or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated and will not be accepted.

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) is the oldest and most renowned professional organization in music therapy. Its membership benefits include access to exclusive conferences, reports, publications, blogs, and worldwide professional networking opportunities; additionally AMTA provides discounts on student memberships.

AMTA is an international membership organization that meets the educational and professional development needs of credentialed professionals in music therapy. Its mission is to promote music therapy’s use in community, special education, and rehabilitation settings.

Music therapists collaborate with people of all ages and life circumstances to assess client needs, formulate treatment goals, and develop music-based strategies for healing. This is a therapeutic relationship where they often collaborate with other allied health professionals in providing comprehensive care to clients.

Music therapists come in many forms, each specializing in a particular therapeutic area such as pediatric or medical music therapy. Others practice in diverse settings like community, developmental, nursing homes, end-of-life care facilities or forensic music therapy centers.

Montclair State University’s MAR-AMTA P#065 Music Therapy Program, offered in partnership with the Cali School of Music, offers an accredited four-year bachelor’s degree in music therapy. This comprehensive program features supportive psychology and research courses that emphasize developing music therapy skills such as assessment, teaching and supervision. Additionally, students take part in a six-month full-time supervised internship to round out their training.
