A Review of EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy is a type of psychotherapy that assists people in healing from traumatic experiences. It’s used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma-related anxiety and depression, as well as other mental health disorders. This therapy works on the assumption that traumas are stored in the brain in ways which may be difficult to process.

During the intake and preparation phase, clients and their therapists gather information about their current struggles to create an individualized treatment plan to get them where healing can occur. This may involve creating a “resource system,” such as visualizing a safe place or identifying figures like wisdom, nurturing or protective figures to call upon during memory reprocessing in EMDR therapy.

The therapy session itself involves reprocessing the trauma through bilateral stimulation (a series of eye movements or vibrating tappers). The therapist also assists the client in installing a positive belief that replaces any negative ones related to their traumatic experience, leading to improved coping strategies and decreased feelings of distress.

This form of therapy has proven to be an effective means for helping those suffering from trauma-related issues heal and feel more whole. It has also been known to aid in recovering from grief, divorce, and other life transitions.

Some PTSD patients report that EMDR therapy has helped them better comprehend the events of their past and even develop healthy coping techniques. A 2018 scientific analysis even found EMDR more successful at relieving symptoms of trauma than cognitive behavioral therapy did, according to this research.

While EMDR has been shown to be more effective than other therapies at relieving symptoms of trauma, it’s not the only form of therapy suitable for people suffering from such issues. Your therapist can suggest other forms of treatment that may be better suited to your individual needs.

EMDR is often combined with other therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotional behavior therapy and/or at-home therapeutic techniques. Your therapist will discuss all available options with you and your family before scheduling any EMDR sessions so that you can make an informed decision about which form of therapy best suits your individual needs.

It’s a relatively new form of treatment, but it has proven to be highly effective at aiding those suffering from trauma to heal and move forward in their lives. Additionally, it has been known to aid individuals recover from grief, depression, and other life transitions.

Treatment usually lasts around 60 minutes and can be administered once a week for three months, amounting to 12 sessions. Depending on each individual’s individual needs, some people may require more than one cycle of EMDR in order to completely resolve their PTSD symptoms.

In a typical session, clients are asked to focus on a traumatic memory and the therapist will guide them through side-to-side eye movements while recalling the event. Additionally, hand-held vibrating tappers may be used to stimulate the client’s brain and help reprocess this painful experience.
