A Review of Research on Health Anxiety on Reddit

There is a subreddit dedicated to health anxiety on Reddit. Over 18,000 members share sensitive mental health information with one another. It is a place for reassurance and advice, but it isn’t a substitute for therapy.

The subreddit offers some helpful tips, but it’s important to keep in mind that no one is monitoring the comments or advice. Taking advice from someone who has never been through the same thing may be harmful. Similarly, older adults may be worried about their children accessing the forum.

Research on depression and anxiety using Reddit data has yet to produce tangible impacts for Reddit users. This review aims to fill in the gaps in the research and explore the implications for practice. We identify key issues that need to be addressed.

Specifically, we systematically screened academic studies on the topic. Using a methodology developed by Peters, et al., eligible studies were chosen based on two criteria: an analytic focus on depression and anxiety, and an inclusion of Reddit as a primary data source. Almost all included studies were published in English.

Among the included studies, a common theme was an intention to move toward user-facing digital outreach. Several studies were performed in conjunction with Amazon Mechanical Turk workers. These researchers gathered information about Reddit users, including their posts, and provided insights about their behaviors.

In general, the studies selected by this review are analytic in nature, and primarily focused on classifying the mental health states of Reddit users. However, they also examined several other related concepts.
