A Sound Therapy App For Tinnitus

Many tinnitus sufferers find that sound masking (using various types of background noise) helps reduce the intensity or annoyance of their tinnitus. Other coping strategies include relaxation exercises, distraction, and sound enrichment. Furthermore, there is evidence to support that sound therapy may improve tinnitus-related quality of life as well as sleep problems.

The research team created a sound therapy app to assist those living with tinnitus in managing their symptoms. Participants used the app for 30 minutes daily, adjusting its time and sounds according to their individual needs. Soon enough, scientists will be testing this sound therapy app in a larger clinical trial.

Tinnitus is an extremely common condition, affecting up to 10-15% of the population. Due to the prevalence and severeness of tinnitus, people are seeking management options to manage their symptoms and enhance quality of life. Numerous apps have been created specifically with this purpose in mind and marketed as tinnitus management tools.

These app strategies have been demonstrated to be successful in relieving tinnitus-related symptoms and improving patients’ quality of life. Unfortunately, their implementation requires careful thought and can prove challenging for some patients to sustain over time.

In this study, researchers surveyed 637 people with tinnitus about their usage of apps for managing it. Overall, 55 apps were mentioned by respondents; 5 weren’t specifically developed with tinnitus in mind but still mentioned it.

The apps were classified according to the content they offered users, using the MARS scale. This method of quality assessment was devised by researchers as an objective way of measuring how effective tinnitus management apps could be. The MARS scale assesses each app against a list of criteria related to sound selection, ease of use, and information provided to users.

Overall, the 18 apps reviewed had high quality content and were highly rated by experts on the MARS scale. A significant number of them displayed high interrater reliability – meaning their ratings from expert rating panels were consistent across multiple devices and platforms.
