Achieving a Positive Ending in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that examines how we think and how those thoughts can lead to issues. It has become widely used for treating depression, anxiety disorders and substance use issues.

At the start of therapy, your therapist will assist you in recognizing and changing problematic thoughts by altering how you think about them. This phase, known as functional analysis, is an integral component of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

By practicing these skills regularly, you can learn to think about different scenarios without feeling anxious and even imagine yourself in those scenarios to alter your feelings of fear or stress. With regular practice on these skills, practicing positive thought patterns and improving overall sense of wellbeing are achievable.

Your therapist will teach you strategies for altering your thoughts, such as distraction and aversion techniques. Together, the two of you will practice these new behaviors in real-world scenarios with the ultimate aim of making them automatic.

At this stage, your therapist will also assist you in developing self-awareness about your beliefs and attitudes. While this can be a challenging step for some individuals, it is an essential one in CBT.

This process will enable you to comprehend how negative thoughts and feelings are connected to your actions, thus helping you determine why making changes is so important for you. While some changes may be easier than others, having the right therapist by your side can make all the difference in overcoming challenges.

Setting goals at the beginning of your therapy can be an integral factor in how much progress you will make with CBT. You must commit to staying with the program and attending certain number of sessions, while your therapist will closely monitor your development throughout this time.
