ACL Surgery Alternative Physical Therapy

Surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is often employed for treating grade 3 ACL tears. A tendon graft, such as from the patella tendon or hamstring, replaces the torn ACL. These attach to both kneecap and tibia via small pieces of bone which reduces postoperative discomfort; however, these grafts lack long-term stability compared to an original ACL.

Prolotherapy, a stem cell-based procedure, stimulates the healing of an injured ACL by injecting bone marrow concentrate into both bundles. Studies have demonstrated that this treatment promotes healing and restores joint stability and function – allowing patients to return to their pre-injury level of sports and activities.

The ACL is a complex ligament that helps stabilize and protects the knee by providing support. It contains multiple tendons and bands that work together to stabilize it, but when these tissues are torn or damaged, instability can develop leading to injury to other parts of the leg and knee.

Many patients with torn ACLs find it difficult to return to their previous level of activity due to pain, weakness or other complications caused by the knee injury. The most effective way to treat a torn ACL is with an individualized physical therapy program designed specifically for you that can help prevent or repair it.

Physical therapy after ACL surgery provides the patient with progress monitoring and instruction on exercises to maintain strength and flexibility in their knee. Additionally, the physical therapist will teach them how to avoid future knee injuries.

This study sought to uncover the extent of variation in rehabilitation progression among physical therapists responsible for caring for patients after ACL surgery, which can have an impact on patient outcomes. By surveying physical therapists who actively treat ACLR patients, researchers were able to identify these discrepancies and explore their clinical practice patterns.
