Acupuncture For Hyperacusis

Hyperacusis is a condition that causes discomfort or pain when exposed to sounds. It can affect anyone of any age and is caused by exposure to loud noises.

Hyperacusis can be triggered by a sudden loud sound or by listening to a noise at an inappropriate level for a prolonged period of time. Patients can develop a tolerance to normal sound levels, but they may become bothered by high-frequency or continuous sounds.

Patients with hyperacusis typically complain of an extreme increase in sound sensitivity. They may also develop phonophobia or an unwillingness to be around loud noises. Some sufferers wear earplugs or earmuffs when they are in a public setting. Using earplugs can provide short-term relief, but it can make the symptoms worse.

A type of treatment for hyperacusis is sound desensitization. In this technique, a specialist works with a patient to build their tolerance to sounds. The specialist gradually builds the patient’s ability to hear quiet sounds until they can handle very loud ones. The procedure can take up to a year to fully benefit from.

Another method of hyperacusis treatment is auditory integration therapy. During this therapy, people listen to music at different volumes for a specified amount of time each day. This is often used in autism treatment.

In addition to listening to quieter sounds, people with hyperacusis may participate in relaxation exercises. These techniques include meditation, breathing exercises, and guided imagery. Other techniques, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), can help people to alter their negative automatic thoughts about sound.
