ADHD Causes and Medications

Genetic risk is the most common factor behind ADHD, though environmental factors and chance events also play a role. Studies have discovered that children with certain birth defects, such as low birth weight or chromosome microdeletions, are more likely to exhibit symptoms of ADHD.

The most effective treatment for ADHD is a combination of behavioral and pharmacological therapy. Combining these can help kids achieve improved focus, self-control and social skills.

ADHD medications tend to be stimulants, which stimulate the brain and help it focus and slow down. They may also be prescribed in order to reduce hyperactivity or impulsivity.

Medicines for ADHD may cause side effects, which can range from mild to severe. Your doctor can discuss the potential risks and advantages of each medication and suggest a dose that works best for you.

In some cases, medications can have adverse reactions in other parts of your body and lead to side effects like high blood pressure or stomach troubles. This makes taking the drug difficult; you may need to experiment with different options before finding one that works for you.

Studies show that two thirds of children with ADHD also have another disorder which may interfere with their behavior or learning. These can include oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, depression, tic disorders or Tourette syndrome, substance abuse issues and sleep issues.
