Advanced Alternative Therapies for Cancer

Advanced alternative therapies are an umbrella term for treatments not yet accepted by conventional medicine. This includes many unproven, costly or potentially hazardous regimens as well as those which could help people cope with side effects from traditional cancer treatments such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Some of these treatments are effective, while others are not. Acupuncture has been demonstrated to reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy and some of these methods are employed for pain management, anxiety management and depression in cancer patients.

Complementary and alternative medical (CAM) practices are commonplace across a variety of countries and cultures around the world, having been practiced for thousands of years with an aim of healing the body naturally. Based on the idea that healing takes place inside us, CAM treatments use various techniques to help facilitate this process.

CAM approaches typically involve the use of herbs, food supplements and other natural supplements, exercise and lifestyle modifications as well as mental healing techniques. Mind-body techniques like meditation, yoga, hypnosis and tai chi can also be classified as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to relieve nausea and pain in cancer patients when combined with chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

Naturopathy is a system of medicine that seeks to restore the body’s own healing mechanisms. This philosophy stems from the idea that disease arises due to either an imbalance of nutrients, and that by restoring this balance you can alleviate symptoms.

Other therapies rely on the idea that toxins accumulate in the body and must be eliminated to promote health. Common regimens involve a “metabolic” diet, shark cartilage, high-dose vitamins and herbal remedies.

These regimens can be expensive and ineffective, often leading to delays or postponements of treatment. Furthermore, these treatments have the potential for interfering with effective mainstream therapies, creating a risk that patients will delay or discontinue treatment altogether.

Some of the more popular alternative regimens include acupuncture, herbalism, ayurvedic medicine, massage and nutritional counseling. Although these techniques may be beneficial in managing some side effects associated with cancer therapy, there is limited research to prove their effectiveness or safety.

It is critical to differentiate between treatments that have been scientifically proven safe and effective, and those without sufficient research on which to base decisions. These criteria are enshrined in the concept of evidence-based medicine, which strives to guarantee healthcare professionals use current best evidence when making daily decisions.
