Alternative Therapies for Vasomotor Symptoms

Vasomotor symptoms are among the most frequent menopausal complaints. They can have an extensive impact on women physically, psychologically and sexually; additionally, they pose a substantial burden to family and friends. Studies have demonstrated that nonhormonal treatments have been proven effective at relieving vasomotor symptoms.

Menopausal symptoms are increasingly being treated with alternative therapies such as yoga and tai chi, herbal medicine and acupuncture, in addition to exercise and dietary changes.

Research into randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has explored the effectiveness of various mind-body therapies for relieving vasomotor symptoms. These include yoga, hypnosis, mindfulness meditation relaxation and paced breathing.

Different treatments exist, such as group therapy and individual sessions. The purpose is to enhance health-related quality of life and boost self-esteem.

These treatments may be effective for relieving menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats; however, further research is necessary to confirm their safety and efficacy in decreasing symptom frequency and intensity.

Yoga and tai chi are mind-body therapies that have been studied for their potential to reduce vasomotor symptoms. Both approaches have been found to decrease sympathetic activity and increase parasympathetic activity, potentially having positive effects on mood as well as body weight.

Acupuncture is an Eastern practice that involves inserting needles into acupuncture points on the body for therapeutic purposes. It works on the principle that energy (qi) flows along meridians in the body, and when this energy flow is disrupted it results in disease. Acupuncture has proven successful at relieving symptoms associated with fibromyalgia or headaches.

Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for VMS due to its capacity to relieve stress, promote blood flow and relax muscles. Not only that, but it also helps with fatigue and insomnia. Acupuncture works effectively on both perimenopausal and postmenopausal women alike.

Other studies have reported the beneficial effects of acupuncture for hot flashes, nausea, irritability and depression. There have also been reports of reduced anxiety levels and lower stress levels.

These studies show a high degree of methodological heterogeneity, yet the results generally support the benefits of acupuncture for relieving VMSs and improving health-related quality of life. These outcomes are especially encouraging given current limitations to hormone therapy.

Despite these encouraging results, more RCTs are needed to further assess the efficacy of mind-body therapies for menopausal symptoms. Conducting larger, well-designed trials that examine long-term outcomes and uncover their mechanisms of action is necessary in order to confirm their effectiveness and fully comprehend their working.
