Alternative Therapies for Women’s Health

Studies have revealed that women are increasingly turning to alternative therapies for health problems. These may include acupuncture, yoga, chiropractic, massage, herbal medicine and homeopathy among others. Unfortunately, due to a lack of research some complementary medicines (CAMs) may still not be safe if not used under proper medical guidance.

Acupuncture: A popular complementary medicine practice, acupuncture uses tiny needles placed at specific points to stimulate the body’s natural energy system called qi in order to promote health and healing. Acupuncture has also been proven to reduce stress, insomnia, headaches and fibromyalgia symptoms.

Yoga: Yoga has long been known to improve health and wellbeing, including relieving menstrual symptoms, nausea and vomiting. This mind/body technique has been practiced for thousands of years.

Reiki: Reiki, or energy therapy, works on the principle that our human energy system impacts physical and emotional states. It’s often used to combat stress and anxiety as well as many other conditions like menopause symptoms.

Herbal Medicine: Studies have demonstrated the efficacy of herbal remedies in treating menstrual and pregnancy-related symptoms such as bloating, cramps and fatigue. Unfortunately, some herbs contain adulterants which make them unsuitable for certain conditions; thus women should always use these herbs under the supervision of an experienced herbalist.

Acupuncture and Massage: Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of treatment that involves inserting needles at specific points on the body’s meridians to stimulate energy flow. Studies have shown it to alleviate many common women’s health issues such as headaches and low back pain.

Naturopathic Medicine: Naturopathic physicians are educated in both traditional Western and Eastern medicine, as well as a range of alternative techniques. They have the capacity to treat many conditions like chronic fatigue, migraines, digestive issues and fibromyalgia.

Hormone Replacement Therapies: Hormone replacement therapy has seen a meteoric rise in recent decades and can have positive effects on many women’s health issues. Studies show that hormone replacement therapy may improve fertility, reduce miscarriages, uterine bleeding, and osteoporosis incidence.

Self-prescribed CAM: There is a lot of misinformation out there about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and many women try these treatments without medical advice. While some CAM can have beneficial effects, others should not be attempted at the risk of depriving a woman of needed treatments or placing her at greater risk.

Overall, the study indicates that those who use alternative medicine are more likely to be dissatisfied with conventional medicine and desire more personal control over their healthcare decisions. They are also more likely to subscribe to a holistic philosophy of health. On the other hand, those who do not primarily rely on alternative care tend to be less dissatisfied with their wellbeing and more likely to seek out traditional healthcare options.
