Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine Impact Factor

People suffering from illnesses and disease have many treatments available to choose from. Some of the more traditional approaches include chiropractic medicine, hypnotherapy, massage therapy and more; other practitioners practice holistic care which encourages wellness without using pharmaceuticals.

What alternative therapies you are considering depend on your motivation for using them. Some may turn to alternative medicine because they feel their condition is hopeless and conventional treatments have failed them. Others may turn to it due to a poor medical experience with a doctor or have failed at using conventional drugs in the past.

Studies have demonstrated that those who choose to utilize CAM tend to be wealthier than their non-user peers, and also report higher rates of education, employment opportunities and health insurance coverage compared to non-users.

Research has demonstrated that alternative medicine users tend to have a less negative attitude toward drugs and surgery, and more strongly agree with the idea of keeping an open mind when seeking medical care. They also believe alternative medicines are more effective at treating certain diseases than traditional treatments and generally safer as well.

Three competing hypotheses explain why people turn to alternative medicine: the medical outcome hypothesis, medical encounter hypothesis and postmodern hypothesis. The medical encounter hypothesis holds that people seek CAM due to dissatisfaction with conventional medical treatments while the postmodern hypothesis emphasizes doctor-patient interaction patterns during such treatments.

The medical outcome hypothesis suggests that alternative medicine users rely on placebo effects to improve their conditions, leading them to seek out various remedies. Conversely, advocates for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) argue that patients who experience the placebo effect shouldn’t be discouraged from using it since their symptoms could also be due to other causes like natural healing processes or cyclical illness patterns.

Contrary to evidence of the effectiveness of alternative medicine, some critics assert it lacks scientific backing and is thus untrustworthy. Additionally, they note the rise of alternative medicine use worldwide – particularly in the United States – which they contend indicates an increasing trend towards non-traditional approaches.
