An Art Therapy Book For People With Anxiety and Depression

Art therapy is a mental health practice that uses visual arts as an intervention to assist clients in dealing with emotional and psychological difficulties. Chapter 7 provides an overview of the history and development of art therapy in the early 20th century to meet the needs of people suffering from mental illness. It discusses key figures like Edith Kramer and Florence Cane, as well as early American art therapists who were leading this field at that time.

These pioneers worked in hospitals where patients with serious mental illnesses would reside for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, these facilities were typically situated far away from major cities, creating an atmosphere of seclusion for many patients.

In these prolonged periods of solitude, patients often experienced physical and psychological symptoms that were difficult to manage. The most prevalent were anxiety, depression, and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

When a patient experiences severe anxiety or panic attacks, it can be challenging to remain calm. Art therapy sessions may offer solutions such as coloring mandala patterns or plaids which induce meditation and help the mind relax into a meditative frame of mind.

However, many self-care coloring books and apps that promote themselves as “art therapy” don’t meet this definition. That is because art therapists must use creativity and intuition when creating activities for clients rather than simply following pre-designed techniques or ideas.
