Anthem Blue Cross and Somatic Therapy

Anthem Blue Cross, a leading healthcare insurance company in the United States, has recently introduced online therapy visits through its LiveHealth platform. Now members can connect with therapists virtually and receive help for mental illnesses like depression or anxiety.

Somatic Therapy is a holistic treatment approach that utilizes the body to promote healing from trauma and PTSD responses. This type of therapy has proven successful at helping resolve emotional issues such as traumatic memories, and may be combined with talk therapy sessions for maximum effect.

Practitioners trained in Somatic Experiencing (SE) or Somatic Behavioral Therapy are known as “SEP’s,” and may include mental health practitioners like psychotherapists, social workers, marriage and family therapists or neurologists as well as nurses, physical therapists, bodyworkers and other medical professionals. Typically these professionals complete a three-year training program which includes consultations with other SE therapists as well as their own person somatic experiencing work.

In these sessions, clients track their own bodily sensations as they process emotions. Unlike most forms of psychotherapy, this method involves an active role from the therapist in helping clients become aware of and process their feelings.

This is an effective modality to consider for those suffering from chronic stress, high levels of anxiety or who have had long-term or extreme PTSD. The purpose is to increase self-awareness and rewire the brain’s response to stressful situations.

I assist clients in rewiring protective and defensive reactions in their lives that have been caused by overwhelming experiences or traumas. Through our work together, clients experience a deep sense of safety and connection that can make all the difference for helping them process past traumas.

My practice incorporates a Somatic Experiencing lens to bring both a relationship and neuroscience-based approach into the work. Additionally, I utilize EMDR, Hypnotherapy, and the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) in my sessions.
