Anxiety Disorders and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition

Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders. They are common in the population, and are associated with a wide range of symptoms. In general, anxiety disorders have a higher incidence among females, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately two to one.

Anxiety disorders are a significant cause of disability, as they can inhibit occupational functioning and social relationships. Although medications are helpful, they are usually only prescribed for a short period of time. The treatment methods include behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, and psychopharmacology.

Anxiety disorders have become increasingly recognized in epidemiological studies. These have provided important information about prevalence and morbidity. A major determinant of anxiety disorder prevalence is cultural syndromes.

Several lines of research have suggested that most anxiety disorders may be characterized as disorders of fear. Fear is an emotional response to a threat that is immediate or imminent. It is a fight-or-flight reaction, and is usually accompanied by physical symptoms.

Symptoms of anxiety disorders may be caused by many medical conditions. Some of them include cardiac conditions, respiratory diseases, neoplasms, and encephalitis.

Anxiety disorders are generally well treated with psychotherapy and medication. But they are accompanied by comorbidity with other disorders, such as depression, and alcohol dependence. Family members should be informed about the symptoms of their loved one’s disorder, and should be reminded of their role in the therapy.

Anxiety disorders are classified under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). This publication was published by the American Psychiatric Association in 2013.

The DSM-5 revisions are based on a dimensional approach. Major subtypes of anxiety disorders are panic disorder, social phobia, and specific phobia.
