Art Therapy As a Holistic Approach to Treatment of Mental Disorders

Art therapy is an alternative form of mental health treatment that utilizes art making as a means to express emotions and thoughts. This more holistic approach to therapy than many others can be beneficial for clients who have difficulty expressing their emotions verbally.

Art therapy has become increasingly common in hospitals and clinical settings, where it helps medical specialists diagnose illnesses and reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms in patients. It may also be combined with other forms of therapy like speech therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

Art therapists can be beneficial for individuals suffering from mental disorders, substance abuse issues or trauma. They help clients express their emotions more openly and explore different aspects of themselves to identify strengths and overcome weaknesses.

A licensed and certified art therapist is skilled at guiding clients through the creative process. To become certified as such, they must possess at least a master’s degree from an accredited art therapy program with 700 hours of supervised practice in individual, group or family formats before being allowed to call themselves “therapist.”

According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapists employ active art-making, creative process and applied psychological theory in order to foster personal, relational and community growth. Their services effectively support mental/emotional well-being, enhance social skills of individuals and communities alike, improve sensory motor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, reduce stress levels, resolve conflicts or distress situations and foster insight and understanding.

They utilize various art media, such as painting, drawing and sculpture to work with clients of any age or ability level. They may also incorporate other techniques like music therapy, dance-movement therapy or writing therapy into their sessions to address a person’s issues.

Some therapists specialize in conditions like depression or autism. Others may have a more general interest in art therapy as an approach to managing emotional and mental health issues.

Typically, clients will be encouraged to create an artwork during their session. Their therapist will then discuss this artwork with them and consider its meaning in light of the emotions expressed.

Therapy using creativity and art has proven beneficial for people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly when dealing with issues related to trauma, depression or PTSD, addictions and other mental health conditions. Through creativity and art, individuals can release emotional pain which often remains bottled up for too long – leading to maladaptive behaviors or substance use.

Art therapists with the highest qualifications must hold a master’s degree or higher in art therapy from an accredited program and be registered with the Art Therapy Credentials Board. Furthermore, they must complete 700 supervised clinical practicum hours as well as practicing art therapy with at least half of their patients during those sessions.
