Azo Urinary Pain Relief

Azo urinary pain relief is a prescription and over-the-counter medicine containing the active ingredient phenazopyridine hydrochloride, which has become the #1 doctor-prescribed ingredient for UTIs. This medication works directly on the site of discomfort to provide immediate comfort.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It helps alleviate painful and burning symptoms caused by urinary tract infections.

People with kidney disease and pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication; it may pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby.

Phenazopyridine is prescribed to treat urinary tract infection symptoms such as pain, burning, irritation and frequent urination. It may also provide temporary relief of these symptoms after surgery, injury or medical procedures.

Topical medication that is applied directly onto the skin. Once absorbed into the bloodstream and transported down to the lower urinary tract, it provides temporary relief from pressure, burning, pain, and urgency associated with urinary tract infections.

Phenazopyridine, the active ingredient in this medication, is generally safe to use for most people. However, it should not be taken if you have diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, kidney disease or a genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Taken without medical guidance, taking medicine for a urinary tract infection (UTI) can be hazardous, as it may lead to pyelonephritis – an infectious kidney infection. Women who don’t get treated after developing a bacterial UTI may develop this condition.

Many patients ask pharmacists what they can take to alleviate UTI symptoms without seeing a physician for an antibiotic or antibacterial prescription. Many popular products promise this relief, such as single-entity phenazopyridine products like Azo Standard or combination products containing methenamine and sodium salicylate such as Cystex.
