Billings Clinic Psychiatric Services

Billings Clinic Psychiatric Services is Montana’s largest inpatient hospital unit and adult and youth behavioral health clinic, consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, advanced care providers and nurses. They serve a vast region across eastern Montana and northern Wyoming that has one of the highest suicide rates among all 50 states as well as vulnerable populations such as veterans and Native Americans on seven reservations; not to mention those suffering from mental illness themselves.

The Psychiatric Services Department serves patients from Billings Clinic, the community and other local health systems throughout Montana. Its team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and other professionals strives to promote safety, excellence and patient-centric care within our communities.

In addition to the psychiatric inpatient unit and adult and youth behavioral health clinic, the Behavioral Health team is also engaged in telemedicine services through a partnership with Eastern Montana Telemedicine Network. This innovative approach to remote psychiatric healthcare increases access for those living in rural communities.

For patients experiencing psychiatric crisis, the emPATH model offers a more homelike environment than an emergency department and reduces agitation. It features recliners and stations where they can receive snacks, beverages, read a book or spend time with a counselor or therapist. This reduces restraint needs while making use of emergency room beds more efficiently, leading to shorter wait times and faster treatment of these patients.

The Youth Partial Hospitalization Program (YPHP) offers short-term, structured psychiatric day hospital treatment for children and adolescents aged 7-17 who are not considered imminent dangers to themselves or others but who are experiencing significant mental health symptoms. Licensed by Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, YPHP contracts with Yellowstone Academy/Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch to offer accredited educational components.

As part of the Behavioral Health team, a psychiatrist nurse practitioner and social worker provide medication-related support to clients in the community. They offer short-term supervised follow-up with a community provider to make sure patients receive necessary medications and reach clinical objectives. Furthermore, these professionals participate in group medical visits, offering counseling and psychosocial support to both patients and families alike.
