Chances are you’ve never heard of misophonia, especially if you’re lucky enough not to be drastically affected by certain sounds. I didn’t like his eating sounds, but when I was actively thinking of another sound, I had time to pause before I reflexively snapped at him. The condition can be very different and while some people find loud noises extremely unpleasant, others find certain noises particularly disturbing, and some develop a fear of certain noises. These people suffer from either misophonia, also known as selective sound sensitivity syndrome (a severe aversion to a sound or group of sounds), or hyperacusis (a reduced tolerance to loud noises).

A few decades later, my sense of sound has become the cause of most, if not all, disputes between my fiancé and myself.

How do I train myself to be less sensitive to noise?

I mentioned that Malcolm was also hypersensitive to the intermittent sound of his neighbor’s water game. Earplugs are an easy way for anyone suffering from some form of noise sensitivity anxiety to live a more comfortable life. You may associate hearing aids with increased sound intensity, but some devices can actually benefit patients with noise sensitivity anxiety by making a calming sound, such as running water. The medical term for abnormal sensitivity to sound or sound is hyperacusis, which refers to a hearing disorder.

You could try gradually exposing yourself to the sounds you don’t like or listening to relaxing music.

Can misophonia be treated with hypnotherapy?

At the age of 11 or 12, Daniel thought his misophonia began after he heard his brother slurping the scum of his juice through a straw. Treatment may include talking therapies that aim to examine and change the way people think about the annoying sounds to reduce stress, change their avoidance behavior, and help them recover from hyperacusis symptoms. It is not always possible or practical for people with misophonia, a rare disease that is caused by certain sounds, to run away. Little is known about this; as a result, traditional treatment options are limited and no cure has yet been found.
