Carolina Partners in Mental Health Durham

Carolina Partners in Mental Health Durham provides a range of treatment options, such as individual therapy and group counseling. Their services are accessible to both adults and children alike; additionally, the organization specializes in addiction treatment, mental illness treatment and intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Mental health care in North Carolina is one of the biggest challenges we face. It’s expensive and many people struggle to access adequate services. But lawmakers in the state have a chance to change that dynamic.

Behavioral health screenings integrated into primary care offices have been shown to keep patients out of psychiatric hospitals and prepare them for lives where they can be productive and involved in their communities.

NC-PAL, a program created by Duke Health, is building the capacity for primary care providers across North Carolina to address mental health needs. It includes mobile apps that assist physicians in recognizing and assessing people suffering from mental illness as well as teaching primary care physicians how to collaborate with behavioral health specialists who can offer treatment and support before those patients require it.

According to Dr. Gary Maslow, who leads NC-PAL as a Duke professor of pediatrics and leads NC-PAL, the goal is to reduce hospital admissions in the state of North Carolina by 25%. Doing so could save taxpayers millions of dollars and prevent preventable deaths, according to Maslow – saving both money and lives at stake!

Samantha Meltzer-Brody, a psychiatry professor at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, noted there are efforts underway to better connect mental health resources with schools and neighborhoods. Through their WHOLE Schools campaign, launched in partnership with Duke University Health Systems and Durham Public Schools Foundation, these organizations strive to make school environments more holistic and trauma informed so everyone can access help when they need it most.

In addition to supporting the WHOLE Schools campaign, the DPS Foundation is supporting four initiatives that address mental health and substance use disorders in school communities. These include a crisis intervention team embedded with licensed clinicians within Durham police dispatch; an alternative to arrest for nonviolent offenders with mental health or substance use issues; as well as new training and resources for first responders.

MindPath Care Centers is a new brand from Carolina Partners in Mental Health that will strive to increase access to mental healthcare. The name accurately conveys their mission: helping individuals live healthy, contented and productive lives.
