Causes and Symptoms of an Anxiety Attack

Anxiety attacks are intense bursts of uncontrollable fear or worry that can come on suddenly without warning.

They may feel like your heart is beating rapidly, you’re about to faint or your chest is hurting. In severe cases, you might even believe that you are close to passing out.

Panic attacks are brief, intense bouts of anxiety that typically peak within 10 minutes and last 30 minutes or less. You might also feel dread or terror which may prompt you to run away, fearful about having another attack, or simply want to escape.

Both conditions can be frightening and uncomfortable, but they are treatable.

Anxiety attacks may be caused by a variety of life experiences such as traumatic events, substance abuse issues, brain changes and medications. If these are due to a medical condition then it’s best to seek assistance from your physician or mental health provider immediately.

Panic and anxiety are still poorly understood, but experts speculate the causes may be related to dysfunction in your amygdala – part of the brain responsible for processing fear and other emotions – as well as imbalances in chemical signals such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) or cortisol levels within your brain.

Effective treatments for panic attacks include psychotherapy and medication. SSRIs, SNRIs and benzodiazepines all work to reduce symptoms associated with these attacks.

You may need to take these medications for some time in order to experience their full effects. Your healthcare provider can prescribe a treatment plan tailored specifically for you.
