Causes of Mental Illness

Mental illness is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and also contributes to social, economic and political inequalities.

Mental illnesses affect everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, income or educational level. Estimates suggest that one out of every five adults struggles with some form of mental health disorder.

People suffering from mental illness often feel isolated and alone, particularly when a family member has been diagnosed with an advanced disorder. This can create a cycle of depression, grief and hopelessness for many individuals.

Some of the most widespread mental illnesses include anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Anxiety symptoms include shortness of breath, trembling, headache, sweating, dizziness and restlessness. Anxiety may also be accompanied by stomach pains, brain fog or difficulty concentrating.

Abuse, traumatic events and discrimination can also lead to mental health problems. Childhood abuse may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while a history of neglect or family violence may be connected with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Genetics can also have an influence on mental illness. If someone in your immediate family struggles with mental illness, you’re more likely to develop it yourself.

Treatment typically entails a combination of therapy and medications. It may also require changes to lifestyle such as exercising regularly and abstaining from illicit drugs.

Early intervention is the key to preventing mental illness from worsening and can also prevent suicidal thoughts and acts. Anyone at risk for suicide should seek medical advice immediately, as these episodes can be very serious.
