Demi Lovato Talks Openly About Her Mental Health

Demi Lovato has always been open about her struggles with mental health, such as an accidental drug overdose and addiction to alcohol and opiates. Currently, she serves as spokesperson for a campaign called Be Vocal which strives to reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Her mental health has had a profound effect on her career as a singer, and she continues to share about it openly. Recently she collaborated with pharma company and mental-health organizations for a mental-health awareness campaign that promotes the idea that opening up about illnesses like depression, addiction, and bipolar disorder can be powerful and help shift how we think about these conditions.

Stay Strong: Beyond Silence, which Lovato co-produced, tells the story of three individuals dealing with various forms of mental illness. Each subject, including Lovato herself, shares their insights into their diagnoses and how speaking out about them has transformed their lives.

Demi Lovato opens up about her past use of drugs to self-medicate and cope with mental health issues. She even admits to being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental health disorder characterized by sudden shifts in mood.

Though she managed to maintain sobriety for six years, an accidental drug overdose in July 2018 left her legally blind and in a coma for months. Though recovery was long, it made her stronger and encouraged her to talk openly about mental health issues.

She attributes her recovery to helping her find love again, noting that Max Adler “helped me get through it.”

Through her recovery process, she is now living a life free from drugs and alcohol. Additionally, she recently collaborated with Sunovion Pharmaceuticals on an initiative that encourages others to open up about their mental health in order to reduce the negative stigmas surrounding such conditions.

Her recovery has inspired her fans, who have been cheering her on with pride and the hope that all her hard work and determination will eventually pay off.

Demi Lovato opens the documentary with a motivational speech about her diagnosis with bipolar disorder and its impact on her life. She had been struggling with her mental health for some time, but when she checked into rehab in 2011, doctors confirmed it: she had bipolar disorder.

She said the diagnosis gave her a new outlook on her behavior and provided her with an effective treatment plan. It also inspired her to work on improving her own mental health as well as become an advocate for mental health causes.

Demi Lovato’s recovery story offers lessons about celebrity narratives on mental illness. It challenges the traditional gendered conception of female stars experiencing mental breakdown, whereby it’s usually seen as a sign of instability, failure and hysteria. Instead, her recovery is seen as an opportunity to reinvent herself as a ‘can-do’ woman – in the words of one Rolling Stone journalist: ‘pop’s rehab princess’.
