Mirror neurons in the premotor cortex appear to be activated (known as hyperreflection) when the person with misophonia sees or hears that other people produce the triggers that can lead to negative experiences. An experiment carried out by Heller and Bergman (195) shows that the perception of tinnitus is inherent in almost all people because they are exposed to low ambient sound levels. It is a form of habituation therapy that was originally developed to treat tinnitus. Retraining therapy, also known as tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), is another method for treating misophonia.

Is misophonia associated with tinnitus?
