Some people with misophonia even find that mimicking the triggering sounds can help alleviate the distress they cause. Even if misophonia starts in response to a particular sound, as is often the case, other sounds can trigger a similar response at some point. According to Johnson, sounds of rain, nature, or similar sounds have proven particularly effective at her work. Up to 85 percent of users reported some relief from their symptoms. This treatment combines a weaker sound trigger with something that evokes positive or happy feelings, such as a favorite song, a photo of a loved one, or something soothing when touched.

Treating hyperacusis sound therapy to get you used to everyday sounds again, and may include wearing earcups that produce white noise, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to change the way you feel about your hyperacusis and reduce anxiety. People aren’t born with hyperacusis, but some may develop an increased sensitivity to sound later in life.

A professional audiologist can correctly assess your level of hyperacusis and then create a solid treatment plan for desensitization.
