Electroshock Therapy

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been around for over 50 years, treating a variety of mental health issues like severe depression, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, catatonia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome/bipolar disorders. With advances in equipment and techniques over these past decades, ECT’s use has grown increasingly widespread.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used to treat treatment-resistant depression in those cases where medications and other treatments have proven ineffective. It may also be utilized to help people suffering from severe mania – a state of intense euphoria, agitation or hyperactivity associated with bipolar disorder.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) uses electrodes placed on the scalp and temple to cause a controlled seizure in the brain. An electroencephalogram (EEG) is used throughout treatment to monitor seizures.

The procedure usually lasts around 20 minutes and is administered under general anesthesia. Throughout the treatment, your heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored, while oxygen is administered through a face mask.

After the treatment, you may experience confusion and dizziness. These effects usually dissipate within an hour of the procedure and should improve over time.

Your doctor and a supportive person will explain what to expect after the procedure, as well as provide information regarding your treatment plan and follow-up care.

ECS (Electroconvulsive Therapy) is a safe and effective treatment for many people suffering from severe mental illnesses, such as depression or other mood disorders. Unfortunately, its risks and side effects have yet to be fully understood or managed. Therefore, ECT should only be administered by a qualified psychiatrist who is knowledgeable about its potential hazards and effects.
