In the initial session, you’ll recall traumatic events and use EMDR techniques to process them and release emotions associated with those memories. They then suggest future planning to reduce distress caused by those memories and prepare you for any potential triggers that may come your way in the future.

Once you have completed a few EMDR sessions, it is necessary to schedule additional consultations with your therapist in order to continue processing the changes that have taken place during treatment. As the EMDR process is comprehensive, it’s essential that you find a therapist who is willing and able to meet with you regularly throughout its duration.

EMDR is a safe, non-threatening psychotherapy that can be beneficial to all types of individuals. However, it’s best to select an EMDR therapist with extensive expertise working with children and teens since EMDR has been proven particularly successful for them.

Research has demonstrated that children and teenagers can be just as effective in EMDR as adults. It’s just that a child or teen’s development is different than an adult’s, making their needs unique. You should consult your therapist to determine if EMDR is suitable for your kid, and how to modify it if needed.

When selecting an EMDR therapist, it is essential to find someone with experience and training in this specialized treatment as well as a trauma-informed clinician. You can check their credentials with the EMDR International Association by asking about their credentials. Moreover, make sure your insurance company understands any specific plan requirements related to EMDR therapy before beginning treatment.
