Examples of Mental Health

According to the World Health Organization, mental health is a state in which individuals recognize their own abilities, are able to manage everyday stresses with grace, work productively and successfully, and contribute positively to their community.

Mental illness is a disorder that interferes or limits one’s capacity for normal daily functioning. It can have detrimental effects on an individual’s health and quality of life.

Mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are all common. While they share many traits, they are distinct from one another.

Anxiety disorders are marked by intense feelings of fear or worry. They may include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety and other phobia-based anxieties.

Depression is a disorder that causes an intense loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities. It may lead to poor sleeping and eating patterns, low energy levels, fatigue and irritability as well as feelings of hopelessness, low self-worth and motivation.

Psychoactive substance use: Substance abuse can exacerbate symptoms associated with certain mental illnesses, such as depression and bipolar disorder. It has also been known to contribute to the emergence of other conditions like schizophrenia and psychosis.

Mental illnesses can present themselves intermittently, but sometimes the signs can be severe enough that professional help is required. These effects may impact how you think and feel, how much work you are capable of, your interpersonal relationships with others, as well as how safe you feel in your own home or workplace.
