Feeling Nervous Or Anxious About Cancelling Therapy?

If you have never sought therapy before, you may feel nervous or anxious about your first session. This is completely understandable and normal. Nonetheless, remember that therapy provides a safe space to explore some of the most personal aspects of life.

Your therapist is trained to assist you in managing anxiety and PTSD symptoms in a healthy manner, with compassion and empathy. However, if their behavior is making you feel unsafe, it’s time to find another therapist.

Clients often become aware when they’re ready to end their sessions with their therapist. This may manifest in various ways, such as not finishing homework, canceling sessions, or forgoing therapy altogether. These behaviors could be subtle indications that the client wants to end the work with their therapist or does not feel comfortable with them anymore.

Many therapists receive training on how to appropriately and therapeutically end their work with clients. Furthermore, they are usually overseen by a licensed professional who knows how to keep clients safe during this process.

They could also be an inappropriate match for the type of therapy offered, lacking cultural competency and respecting each client’s unique needs.

Therapists must always be open and honest with their clients regarding their policies and practices. If they cannot give you a satisfactory explanation of why they need to cancel an appointment, it would be wise to search for another therapist.

Even if you have a valid reason for canceling an appointment, it’s still essential that you express this in person with your therapist. Doing so gives them the chance to assist and be supportive during this difficult time.
