GAD Treatment

GAD is a condition that affects the mental health of more than 4 million adults in the United States each year. Many people with the disorder find it difficult to function and make decisions. Symptoms can include worry, sleeplessness, difficulty with concentration, and intense emotions. There are a variety of treatments available to help you manage your symptoms.

Treatment can include medications, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes. Typically, these techniques will work to ease symptoms, but you may need to try more than one method before finding the right fit.

One common treatment for GAD is to take antidepressants. These medications will modulate brain chemicals, including serotonin and norepinephrine. They can also help reduce physical symptoms of anxiety. However, they typically take several weeks to take effect and may cause side effects.

Atypical antipsychotics are another option for treating GAD. Although they can help, they have been known to cause serious side effects. Typical drugs used for this treatment include quetiapine (Seroquel) and olanzapine (Zyprexa).

Some studies have shown that cognitive bias modification programs are effective for treating GAD. This therapy teaches patients to create alternative outcomes to ambiguous situations. The program also requires them to create neutral interpretations of the material they are interacting with.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is also a recommended form of GAD treatment. It focuses on teaching patients different ways to think about things, including observing their thoughts and acting on them.

During therapy, a therapist will teach the patient to focus on the surrounding environment, take action on their values, and accept their own thoughts and feelings. It is usually administered face-to-face, but you can also receive support from a therapist over the phone.
