Getting to the Root of Migraines

Migraine headaches can be debilitating and have a major impact on your daily activities. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available to manage them and get back up and running. Migraines are believed to be caused by an overactive brain, which then affects blood vessels and other structures in the head. Although exact causes of migraine remain unknown, experts speculate that certain environmental triggers such as loud noises, lights, food or caffeine may trigger a chemical reaction in your brain which leads to headaches.

Headaches can occur on one or both sides of your head and are often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and other symptoms. They can last anywhere from a few hours up to several days and usually begin with an aura (a series of sensory warning signs) before the actual headache begins.

When a migraine begins, other symptoms that may make it difficult to bear include nausea and vomiting, dizziness or vertigo, sensitivity to light or sound, altered vision or hearing, as well as feelings of weakness or disorientation.

They’ll check for muscular tension, fascia tension and nerve tension in your neck that could be contributing to pain and other symptoms. They may also perform manual cervical traction to separate bones, joints and disks in your neck for further relief.

Massage can be an effective way to relieve migraine-associated pain. Your physical therapist can teach you specific self-massage techniques that may help alleviate your symptoms, such as massaging the head, neck, jaw and temples. They may also demonstrate how to apply ice and heat to sore areas on your body while offering advice on relaxation techniques and stress reduction – which have been known to trigger migraines in some individuals.

Your physical therapist can offer guidance on diet and lifestyle changes that may help prevent migraines. They may suggest eating low sodium meals, avoiding spicy or acidic dishes, and drinking plenty of water. Furthermore, they may teach exercises to improve posture and balance – often a migraine trigger – as well as teach you exercises specifically tailored towards this issue.

Combining chiropractic care, manual therapy and acupuncture can also be effective in treating migraines. This type of care helps to retrain the brain and nervous system to reduce migraine attacks in frequency and intensity.

Physical therapy is most successful when there’s a strong bond between you and your therapist. It’s essential that you communicate your goals and needs to them so they can provide you with the highest quality care.
