Holistic Nursing and CAM Therapies

Nurses interested in becoming holistic nurses may not know what to expect from this profession. Holistic nursing is a specialty of the American Nurses Association that utilizes complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for patient treatment. It takes an integrated approach to healthcare that recognizes body, mind, and spirit as interconnected systems.

This practice emphasizes the fact that health and illness can be affected by many factors, such as stress, diet, and lifestyle. By understanding this concept, nurses can craft a personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient.

One of the primary responsibilities of a holistic nurse is to help patients prevent illnesses or diseases from arising in the first place. This can be accomplished through providing them with nutritional guidance, exercise routines, and stress management strategies.

Meditation, yoga and acupuncture are some of the techniques that can be employed for relaxation and improved wellbeing. Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that has been known to reduce pain while increasing circulation of blood and energy, increasing endorphins while relieving anxiety.

Another method of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy is reflexology, which involves massaging or rubbing specific areas on the feet or hands to encourage healthy energy flow throughout the body. It’s a relaxing and healing therapy that may be especially helpful for individuals suffering from chronic stress or tension.

Other CAM therapies that patients may benefit from include reiki, homeopathy and herbalism. These can be used in conjunction with Western medical treatments but also taken separately as part of a patient’s overall wellness plan.

Holistic nursing emphasizes that the body, mind and spirit are inextricably linked and can be healed. This implies treating a patient’s mental and spiritual issues is just as essential to their overall well-being as treating physical ailments.

If a patient has had mental health issues in the past, a holistic nurse might suggest they try practicing meditation or yoga as an outlet to cope. This is especially beneficial if there has been trauma experienced recently as meditation can be highly therapeutic.

A holistic nurse may use massage therapy as part of a therapy plan to relieve muscle tension, pain and stress. Massage may be particularly helpful for people with high blood pressure as well as being an effective way to reduce fatigue.

Nurses have the unique opportunity to form bonds with their patients and make them more comfortable during trying times in their lives. Many nurses find this profession to be highly rewarding and fulfilling.

As a holistic nurse, you have the potential to work in many settings such as hospitals, clinics, private practices and nursing homes. You might also find employment with government agencies or nonprofit organizations. Hospice care facilities often employ holistic nurses for therapeutic treatments provided to terminally ill patients.
