Holistic Therapies for Anxiety and Depression

If you’re interested in incorporating mind-body practices into your treatment, holistic therapy could be the ideal option. Holistic therapies often incorporate techniques like movement, meditation, reiki, massage and acupuncture into sessions; however it is essential that the person providing these services is a trained licensed therapist who can help heal both body and mind.

Holistic therapy has the potential to reduce trauma, anxiety, depression and strengthen relationships. Additionally, it increases self-awareness and gives you tools to work through everyday stressors more effectively.

Holistic therapy often includes yoga, breathing exercises, meditation and biofield therapies to clear blocked energy fields. Additionally, healthy eating habits and stress-relieving activities may be included as part of a holistic healing regimen.

A typical holistic therapy session lasts an hour. This typically includes a thorough intake, where the therapist asks about previous experiences with holistic therapy and other aspects of your health history. Based on this information, they will craft an individualized treatment plan specifically for you.

Lenaya Smith Crawford, a holistic therapist, believes that somatic psychotherapy is the most effective form of holistic therapy to address anxiety and depression. This type of holistic treatment addresses both mental and physical symptoms simultaneously and is generally considered more efficient than talk therapy alone.

Sumpf and Crawford emphasize the importance of finding an experienced holistic therapist with specialized training. They suggest searching for someone who is certified as both a somatic therapist and yoga teacher with 300 hours or more of instruction.

If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, it’s wise to consult your healthcare professional prior to beginning any therapy. Furthermore, discuss any medications currently taking with the therapist in order to establish whether they’re safe to continue during therapy.

Holistic therapy has not yet been proven to replace taking medication or seeing a psychiatrist, but it can help people feel better in their everyday lives. It should be noted that certain conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress disorder do not respond well to holistic therapy and may need medication before trying this route.

“I always advise clients to do some research and speak with several holistic therapists before making their decision,” Sumpf says. She and Crawford both suggest asking your potential therapist about their training, experience, and credentials before booking an appointment.”
