Occupational therapy (OT) is an evidence-based, client-centered approach to improving function and quality of life through activities that allow people to participate in meaningful tasks. Holistic transitional occupational therapy addresses patients’ mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing by engaging them in meaningful occupations that promote well-being and self-care. This is achieved by using techniques such as reflexology, meditation, reiki, bodywork and acupuncture to increase a patient’s capacity for managing their overall wellbeing.

Mental health is essential to all OT interventions and can be affected by depression, posttraumatic stress disorders, drug/alcohol abuse, dementia/Alzheimer’s disease or oncology. Occupational therapists are trained to assess mental health of their patients and collaborate with them on creating an effective treatment plan.

In occupational evaluations, therapists focus on an individual’s roles and rituals that have been formed through life experiences. These patterns can have a significant effect on one’s sense of self, identity, and purpose; changes to these patterns could potentially impact occupational performance for that individual.

Therefore, it is essential to assess the patient’s role and rituals in order to understand how these patterns may be shifting. The therapist then has the capacity to determine the most suitable course of intervention for each individual.

OTs use a range of assessments to gather information about an individual’s strengths and challenges. For instance, using their personal preference indicator (PPI) allows OTs to collect preferences and how certain skills were acquired.

An occupational therapist (OT) can perform a comprehensive occupational evaluation to identify functional strengths and challenges. This may include an environmental/ecological assessment, play-based performance profile, as well as other tools designed to meet each individual’s requirements.

The occupational therapist can then collaborate with the educational team to identify each student’s functional strengths and challenges, then craft an instructional program tailored specifically for them.

Support and guidance within an educational setting is a fundamental aspect of occupational therapy for students with autism. This could include aiding them with accessing their curriculum, encouraging progress and building on academic and social abilities.

This can be achieved through a variety of methods, such as working directly with students, consulting with educational teams, monitoring progress and collaboration to meet individual objectives. Therapists use their professional expertise and scientifically-based research to decide on service intensity and frequency.

Occupational therapists can also aid injured individuals in finding and creating alternative employment. This is an integral part of rehabilitation as it helps them return to work. Unfortunately, studies have demonstrated that transitioning back to employment after injury can be a challenging and complex process.
