In some cases, your GP may refer you to a hearing specialist, an audiologist, who can perform a range of hearing tests and talk to you about available treatments. Some people may hear sounds similar to music or singing, and others may hear sounds that beat in time with their pulse (pulsatile tinnitus). They’ll examine the outside and inside of your ear to look for obvious problems they might be able to treat, such as a buildup of earwax or an ear infection. If your tinnitus is caused by an underlying condition, treating the condition will help stop or reduce the sounds you hear.

How can I open my clogged ears?

If your ears are congested, try swallowing, yawning, or chewing sugar-free gum to open up your eustachian tubes. If your ears are still congested after many home treatments, see a doctor, especially if you have hearing loss, ringing in your ears, or have complaints. There is a tube between the area behind your eardrum and your nose and throat, called the Eustachian tube. Using a nasal spray can relieve sinus congestion and inflammation, which can ultimately help separate your ears from the plug.

Research shows that these two methods have roughly the same success rate when it comes to unplugging or “popping your ears.”

Can an audiologist help with a clogged ear?

Many insurance companies don’t cover an audiologist for this procedure and it’s often a deductible, but it’s worth using the trained audiologist who works in this area every day. They may also want to do a hearing test to determine if there is any hearing loss associated with the Eustachian tube dysfunction. If you’ve tried these simple remedies and continue to have a clogged ear and hearing loss in that ear, it’s time to make an appointment with an audiologist to diagnose the culprit. As soon as an audiologist or hearing care professional can identify the pattern of the deposits and what type of earwax is being produced, a house plan can be created for safe removal at home.
