In New Zealand, Māori patients who are mentally ill can be received by a Kaumātua or Kuia and admitted to hospital. A partial hospital stay is an innovative program for people who need intensive, long-term mental health intervention, either as an alternative to inpatient care or as more intensive outpatient treatment. Sometimes a mental illness can become so severe that the person with the disease may not even realize that they are not feeling well. You may need to stay in hospital if you can’t manage your mental illness symptoms at home and need more intensive help.

This program is available to men and women aged 18 and over who suffer from a mental health issue.

The abolition of psychiatric beds results in enormous burdens for law enforcement agencies, prisons and hospital admissions, in which acutely ill people are essentially “reinstitutionalized” — or have to live on the streets. Although there are mental health facilities that focus on either children or adults, most mental health units treat both groups. Patients usually have a certain amount of freedom, and mental health clinic campuses are generally larger than mental health departments. Some mental health clinics may also offer different levels of care, including inpatient, sometimes hospitalized, and outpatient intensive care.
