Adults with moderate to severe tinnitus and hearing loss that can be aggravated benefit from either TRT or SC treatment combined with the use of hearing aids. Although these results were positive and demonstrate the effectiveness of TRT, a generalization to the majority of adults with chronic tinnitus and concurrent hearing loss may not be valid. A study that compared cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) combined with the counseling part of TRT with standard care (ENT, audiologist, masker, hearing aid) found that specialized treatment had a positive effect on quality of life as well as on specific tinnitus metrics. Directive counseling is an important part of TRT, which aims to combat false perceptions, emotional responses, and cognitive distortions associated with tinnitus.

Does TRT work for tinnitus?

The use of amplified ambient noise was also recommended for the SOC group, which achieved a similar result to the TRT subgroup, which effectively only received TC with ambient noise when using placebo-SG. Although tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) requires at least 12 months, it usually produces the most lasting results. Compared to masking, TRT led to greater improvement in people with more severe tinnitus at baseline, but this study had a low quality of evidence. TRT, for example, is a promising treatment that involves you undergoing a combination of counseling and sound therapy to gradually get used to the sound of your tinnitus.
