How to Advise Someone With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

In today’s fast-paced world of social media, calls, text messages and other distractions, many adults with ADHD struggle to focus on everyday tasks that matter most. Making a grocery list or filing paperwork at work may become boring or uninteresting tasks for someone with ADHD – leading them to put off these tasks altogether.

Structure Your Schedule
Organization is key for those with ADHD. Setting predictable times and places for everything so they know what to expect and can stay motivated are important steps. This includes getting ready in the morning, eating meals, taking care of their belongings, and going to bed at a reasonable time.

Establish a schedule that allows for some leisure time, but not too much that it becomes exhausting. Additionally, set timers for homework or transitional periods between doing something enjoyable and getting ready to go to bed.

Eat at regular, scheduled intervals – no more than three hours apart. This is especially beneficial for kids with ADHD who often struggle to focus when their meals are irregular.

Keep a healthy snack on hand to stay motivated between meals. A small piece of fruit, some nuts or some chips can be an invaluable aid when working, running errands or attending to other responsibilities.

It’s essential to get enough sleep and exercise each night. A sound sleep will help your brain focus and concentrate, while an active day may reduce symptoms of ADHD.
