How to Deal With Panic Attacks

Many people suffer from panic attacks, which can have a major impact on your life. Fortunately, there are ways to cope with them.

Panic attacks occur when your body’s natural fight-or-flight response is activated. This can be an intensely frightening and disorienting experience, particularly if you don’t understand why it’s occurring.

A sudden attack can be overwhelming, but you can learn to manage it and return to normal as quickly as possible. There are simple techniques you can employ such as breathing exercises, visualization and relaxation techniques for added support.

Practice these methods before you experience the symptoms of a panic attack, so that you can relax both your body and mind.

Deep breathing is the best way to relax your body and mind during a panic attack. Take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for several seconds, then exhale gently through your mouth.

It can be beneficial to identify what causes your panic attacks so that you can take steps to change them. For instance, if a crowded or loud environment typically triggers an attack for you, try finding a quiet space such as a cafe or quiet room at work.

When experiencing a panic attack, remind yourself that it will pass quickly and the symptoms aren’t harmful. Also, tell yourself that you are safe and these episodes are unlikely to happen again.
