Shyness can be an expected emotion, but extreme shyness that prevents you from socializing or participating in certain social situations could indicate a larger issue. This could be indicative of social phobia, an anxiety condition known as simply social anxiety.

Your doctor may suggest either medication or psychotherapy. Medication can help reduce the intensity of your symptoms, while psychotherapy helps you comprehend why they are occurring and how to address them.

Combining both treatments has been found to be more successful than either one alone. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that has been proven particularly helpful for social anxiety.
