How to Define Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of fear, worry or nervousness that may or may not be related to any particular situation. While anxiety symptoms and emotions are not normal, they could indicate an underlying mental health issue such as depression or bipolar disorder.

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, specific phobias and panic disorder. Each is characterized by an intense and persistent state of worry and fear that lasts for most or all of one’s life.

People suffering from anxiety often feel tense and worried, experience physical changes such as sweating or trembling, and avoid certain situations due to their fears. In severe cases, these symptoms may even lead to a panic attack.

Individuals experience anxiety for various reasons. Physical issues like heart conditions or substance abuse issues like caffeine may contribute to this feeling, while traumatic experiences or difficult relationships may also trigger it.

Personal triggers can be a combination of things that make you anxious, such as a particular smell, place or song. While these triggers may be difficult to identify on your own, working with a mental health specialist who specializes in this area may provide invaluable assistance.

Antianxiety medications are effective treatments for many conditions, either taken alone or combined with talk therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

People suffering from an anxiety disorder are more likely to have a family history of the condition and may also have other mental health issues such as depression. Without treatment, symptoms of anxiety often worsen over time; thus, it’s essential that you seek help before things get out of hand.
