How to Prove an Anxiety Disability

Anxiety is a disorder that causes people to have excessive panic and worry. It can interfere with daily activities, relationships and work.

If your anxiety is so severe that it prevents you from working, you may qualify for disability benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will evaluate your condition. SSA experts will check the details of your medical and employment history, including whether you have other medical conditions or disabilities that make you unfit to work.

To qualify for disability benefits, you need to show that your anxiety disability is a disabling impairment. Disability policies often define an anxiety disorder as a mental nervous condition. This is a difficult claim to win, however, because anxiety disorders tend to be subjective.

A qualified mental health professional can provide an objective basis for your diagnosis. Some common symptoms include heart racing, suffocation sensation, confusion, sweating, hyperventilation, and panic attacks.

You may also be able to prove your anxiety disability by presenting your medical records. These documents will include your treatment notes and your physician’s diagnosis.

The SSA has developed guidelines for creating medical-vocational determinations. In particular, age and functional capacity are factors taken into account. Creating a medical-vocational determination requires you to show that your anxiety disability significantly limits your ability to perform basic functions of daily living, such as eating, sleeping and caring for yourself.

Your physician’s assessment will be the key to proving your disability. The SSA will use your evaluation to determine your level of severity and how much of your day to day activities are affected by your anxiety.
