How to Teach R Sound in Speech Therapy

The r sound is an essential letter in many words, and speech therapy can help your child learn how to pronounce it correctly. With improved articulation and pronunciation of their words as well as improved understanding when speaking, speech therapy will have a major impact on their development.

When teaching your student how to pronounce the r sound, the first step should be recognizing where they make errors in their pronunciation. The r sound can be found in initial position, medial position and final position of words; so it’s essential that you identify which areas your student has difficulty with pronunciation.

Your speech therapist will listen carefully to your student’s words and ask them questions about the sounds they use. They could be substituting a “y” sound for an “r”, changing it into an e, or completely losing the R sound quality altogether.

Another way to identify where a student may have difficulties is by looking at their tongue. If the r sound is incorrect, it could indicate that their tongue is misplaced in their mouth. A licensed speech therapist can demonstrate how to pull back their tongue and use all of their mouth muscles in order to keep it in its proper place and move it in the correct direction.

Your therapist will then provide verbal cues and hand-tongue movements to demonstrate how to correctly pronounce “r” in your mouth. They may also point out the correct shape of your jaw for optimal comfort.

Make an r sound with your tongue by keeping it tight and wide (what she refers to as a fat tongue). Your tongue’s sides should rest against both upper back molars and front teeth.

Your therapist can also show you how to create a bunched r, similar to the r hump.

The r hump is an effective way to help your student learn how to pronounce “r” correctly, as it helps them practice it with their own words. Once they have the basic pronunciation down, encourage them to expand on it on their own.

When working on a new placement, it is always best to take your time and do it correctly. From explaining and showing, to feeling the tongue and focusing intra-orally; each therapy step should be completed slowly, methodically, and thoroughly.

Once your student has successfully produced the r sound with your guidance, encourage them to try other sounds similar to it. Doing this will build confidence and enable them to continue practicing with the r sound.

Once they start making the r sound correctly, be sure to lavish them with praise and encouragement. Doing this will help reinforce their newfound proficiency in producing this letter sound, making it more durable over time.
