How to Use Insomnia Rest Client for API Testing

Insomnia Rest Client is an open source, robust API client designed to store, organize and execute REST API requests elegantly. It’s free cross-platform desktop framework with features like cookie management, environment variables, code generation and authentication – available for Mac, Linux and Windows operating systems.

To utilize Insomnia, you need a web API application running. After that, download the Insomnia app from its official website (Mac only).

To begin, create an API request using Insomnia’s “New Request” button. In the resulting window, give your request both a name and method.

Insomnia is an ideal tool for API testing, as it offers various useful functions that enable you to quickly test your API’s functionality and get user feedback. For instance, the response – raw body function allows you to extract specific header values from a response.

Insomnia provides multiple projects with environment variables that can be shared. It supports cloud-based end-to-end encryption for security and has a table view for editing variables used in JSON input components. Furthermore, you can synchronize your environments with team members by registering in the Insomnia web dashboard – this enables all members to view shared projects on Insomnia desktop.
