Insomnia Treatment

Insomnia treatment involves employing sleep strategies, relaxation techniques and medications to aid in falling asleep and getting adequate rest each night. Your healthcare provider can assist in selecting the appropriate treatments tailored towards your individual needs.

The initial step in treating insomnia is to identify the source of your issue. Once identified, it will help guide your treatment plan.

Once they’ve ruled out other medical conditions or diseases that could be causing your insomnia, your doctor is likely going to suggest medication to help you sleep. They may prescribe benzodiazepines – sedatives which reduce nervous system activity.

Other options include taking melatonin, which helps to reset your internal sleep/wake cycle. This medication must be taken as a pill about an hour before bedtime.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a type of treatment for insomnia that provides techniques to relax and regulate your breathing, manage thoughts and emotions, and fall asleep quickly. CBT can be offered individually or in group sessions.
